Op 9 november organiseert het Centraal Joods Overleg de jaarlijkse Nationale Kristallnachtherdenking. De herdenking vindt plaats in de Portugese synagoge aan het Mr. Visserplein om 17.30 uur. Kristallnacht was een door de nazi-regering georkestreerd pogrom in Duitsland en Oostenrijk die het begin inluidde van geweld tegen Joden, culminerend in de industriële uitroeiing van de Joden in de landen onder nazi-heerschappij, waaronder ook Nederland.
De AANMELDING hiervoor is GESLOTEN. Alle plaatsen bij de herdenkingsbijeenkomst zijn geheel ‘uitverkocht’.
Zoals ieder jaar bestaat het programma uit een aantal sprekers: iemand die de Kristallnacht heeft meegemaakt, een openbaar bestuurder en de voorzitter van het Centraal Joods Overleg. De openbaar bestuurder die dit jaar spreekt is minister Sigrid Kaag.
Dit jaar spreekt ook de Israelische ambassadeur de heer Modi Ephraim, de Amerikaanse ambassadeur in Nederland, mevrouw Shefali Razdan-Duggal. Mevrouw Duggal is bestuurslid geweest van het US Holocaust Museum, een door de Amerikaanse president benoemde positie. Mirjam Weitzner-Smuk heeft als Joods kind de Kristallnacht meegemaakt in de Duitse plaats Essen. Kort daarna werd zij door haar ouders naar Nederland gestuurd. Tenslotte spreekt de heer Chanan Hertzberger, voorzitter van het Centraal Joods Overleg.
Vorig jaar sprak minister Wopke Hoekstra, destijds nog een van de drie vicepremiers van het kabinet; dit jaar dus mevrouw Kaag eveneens vicepremier. In voorgaande jaren spraken onder meer de burgemeesters Cohen, Van der Laan en Halsema van Amsterdam en burgemeester Aboutaleb van Rotterdam, de Tweede Kamervoorzitters Verbeet, Arib en Bergkamp en de Eurocommissarissen Bolkestein en Timmermans.

The massive outbreak of anti-Semitism on the night of November 9-10, 1938, in which nearly 100 Jews were murdered in Germany and Austria and thousands of synagogues and shops of Jews were also destroyed, foreshadowed Hitler’s attempts to exterminate the Jewish people. As every year, the Central Jewish Conference (CJO) commemorates this massive outbreak of anti-Semitism in the monumental Portuguese synagogue in Amsterdam.
On November 9, the Central Jewish Conference organizes the annual National Kristallnacht commemoration. Kristallnacht was a pogrom orchestrated by the Nazi government in Germany and Austria that heralded the beginning of violence against Jews, culminating in the industrial extermination of the Jews in the countries under Nazi rule, including the Netherlands.
As every year, the program consists of a number of speakers: someone who has experienced Kristallnacht, a public administrator and the chairman of the Central Jewish Conference. The public administrator who is speaking this year is Minister Sigrid Kaag. Last year, Minister Wopke Hoekstra, at the time one of the three deputy prime ministers of the cabinet, spoke; this year, Mrs. Kaag is also Deputy Prime Minister.
In previous years, three successive mayors of Amsterdam and the mayor of Rotterdam, the three successive presidents of the House of Representatives and the Dutch European Commissioners Frits Bolkestein and Frans Timmermans spoke.
This year, the American ambassador to the Netherlands, H.E. Ms. Shefali Razdan-Duggal, will also speak. Ms. Duggal has been a board member of the U.S. Holocaust Museum, a position appointed by the U.S. president. Ms. Mirjam Weitzner-Smuk experienced Kristallnacht as a Jewish child in the German town of Essen. Shortly afterwards she was sent to the Netherlands by her parents. She talks about what she experienced in Essen. Finally, Mr Chanan Hertzberger, chairman of the Central Jewish Conference will deliver his speech.
